Our Steroid Education program will close as of 12 July 2024.
Unfortunately, funding for this program has finished and we cannot continue to offer supports to people using anabolic steroids beyond 12 July 2024.
Body building and insulin
If you use insulin as a bodybuilder you are putting your health and your life at risk. Insulin is a hormone that helps clear glucose from the bloodstream, when misused it is dangerous and can cause a range of harmful side effects.
Know the risks
The major risk associated with insulin is a physical state known as hypoglycaemia or ‘hypo’ for short. You may also know this as low blood sugar.
It occurs when blood glucose levels fall below 3.5 mmol/L, which is why it is extremely important to monitor your blood glucose levels. Some of the early signs and symptoms of hypo include:
- sweating and clammy skin
- shaking and trembling
- hunger or nausea
- dizziness and feeling light headed
- general body weakness
- pins and needles around the mouth
- headache
- slurred speech
- racing heart beat.
Please see our booklet below for more information on body building and insulin.
